Six More People

By Randy Dyer

I told you we had a move today, but yesterday, at the 11th hour, another one came our way. A mother and a 20-month-old boy. Normally we would have put them off to another day, but they had been in the apartment for three days already, so we adjusted.

First, the first move…

Let’s go to the mailbag…

Paul Demarco was one of the first to respond to the one just up the road. He wrote:

“Elaine and I live in Olney and would be honored to help our neighbor. Please count us in”

Could any of us have said it any better?

Straw boss on the move was Chris Baliko, and newbie, Chris Netram. Chris is the kind of newbie we all want. He doesn’t wait to be asked. He asks, “What can I do next?” Rounding out the crew was a family affair, including the Demarco’s, the whole Modlin clan, Amy, Ryan and Gonzaga Senior, Owen, as well as Kelly Costello and son Gus. Lifter-in-chief was Daniel Keegan.

Huge thanks to the Toy and Book Committee for their gifts to the 17 and 12 year old girls, and particularly for what they did for the 14 year old boy. All the kids weighed in on the move, and we were in and out within an hour of leaving the Storage Unit.

Kudos also to the amazing work of the School Supplies Group, ably led by Kathleen McGuan. Rosemary Callahan, Amy Hamilton, and, doing double duty, Amy Modlin, got those kids ready for school with backpacks, water bottles and supplies a teacher would be proud of.

The second move was a surprise, and I wasn’t sure if we would have enough to do two crews, but I should never have doubted it.

Back to the mailbag…

Pat Bakey who volunteered, but had to sit out when the roster filled up wrote:

“I thought the 8AM rally call would thin the herd……but not this tribe ”

Not this tribe, indeed.

This one was to a high rise overlooking I-270. After a brief dance to find the loading dock. Mike Harper and Jim Nalls were joined by Chris Leonette and his two sons who lifted and toted anything they could lay their hands on. Lisa Feingursh, Dorea McMahon and Kathy Nalls rounded out the team. Chris “the Beast” Casey was on the move but got separated from the caravan and the team was less for his absence. Again, the T&B Committee got the word late last evening but put together a wonderful surprise for the boy.

I leave you with something from the Bard, himself.

“How far that little candle throws his beams! So shines a good deed in a weary world”

— Portia, The Merchant of Venice

We made our world a little less weary today.
